Jenab-e Ali,
Nobody says we don’t need the help from other countries; and let’s face it, at the current point in time, that country would be for the most part United States of America and maybe some European countries. As you, I am sure, know in the region, thanks to the policies of this ninth government and to the existence of the Islamic Republic our country is under pressure and threat of even those neighbors of us who didn’t exist half a century ago. Yes, I assure you nobody claims we don’t need help from whoever who can give it to us.
Now, if foreign countries in concert with each other and in coordination with the opposition within Iran and outside Iran put pressure on Islamic Republic, then I would say yes indeed that would be great. But in all honesty, what is the chance of that to happen. We can’t even get the opposition outside Iran get together and do something together. So what you are suggesting as the way out of this mess is only a sweet dream.
And on another point, of course, the regime will benefit from convincing the world and to a much lesser degree the people within Iran that there is some sort of democracy in Iran because there is viable election process. However, this is the nature of politics. Anything in politics has two faces and there are more than one outcome from any situation. Those in favor of participation in the political process are not under the illusion that we actually have democracy in Iran. Elections, even if held in perfect form, don’t mean democracy in and of themselves. And we don’t even have that in Iran. What we have is electing between those that the regime picks for us and we get to elect from those few appointed ones. So there is no such illusion on the part of those in favor of participation.
Anyway we can create division within the regime and utilize that is a good thing. Participation in the electoral process if it means just getting out one day and dropping your vote in box and going back home, of course, that is not what is meant. The participation involves action and interaction within our society, within cities, it may evolve into a movement. And of course we want it to be as peaceful as possible.
I also believe the weight and role and importance of the opposition whining Iran and that of outside Iran are very different. The opposition within Iran is the main opposition. Outside can only help the inside mostly by being their voice to the rest of the world. We can’t tell people within Iran whether to participate or not. We are for the most part irrelevant. At least so far unless we get united and be able to show our force.
Payandeh Iran!
